Abstract

With the process of globalization, it has begun to be argued that forms of cultural expression have been severed from their roots, giving rise to a hyper-cultural space where distinctions between the local and the foreign, the near and the far, and the familiar and the exotic have dissolved. In this book, German philosopher and cultural theorist Byung-Chul Han brings together countless forms of diversity, ranging from tourism to nutrition, and from cooking methods to ways of thinking. Today’s culture has become boundless, unrestricted, and dissolved: hyper-culture. Han argues that today, all of us have become hyper-cultural tourists, even within our “own” culture—to which we no longer even belong. Hyper-cultural tourists travel through the hyperspaces of events that serve as cultural exploration zones. This book opens up a discussion on contemporary cultural experiences.
