Emergency Service Standards and Space Design in Turkey: The Example of Başakşehir Çam and Sakura Hospital

Abstract

Emergency services are health units of critical importance within the health system, where the health conditions of patients are evaluated and treatment or intervention appropriate to their needs is provided. These units undertake the task of saving lives, especially in cases that require urgent medical intervention such as accidents and injuries, and therefore have the obligation to provide uninterrupted health service. This article discusses the factors that should be taken into account in the design of emergency departments and emphasizes the importance of space layout for the effective functioning of these units and the safety of patients. These factors include the structure of emergency services, the design of patient waiting areas, and the integration of emergency services with other health units. This article also examines the interior design of the emergency room and focuses on important design criteria such as effective orientation, separation of clean and dirty foot areas, arrangement of corridor widths in accordance with patient density, and effective positioning of triage units. Additionally, information was given about the development of regulations and standards regarding emergency services in Turkey.

In this study, where the physical space needs of emergency services are also discussed, the functional leveling of emergency services, the design of physical areas in accordance with certain criteria, the regulation of patient flow, the importance of the triage area and other critical areas are discussed in detail. The importance of the capacity of these emergency healthcare units to provide safe and effective healthcare services to patients is emphasized. In the article, the emergency department design of Başakşehir Çam and Sakura Hospital was examined in this context, and in accordance with the mixed research method, quantitative data was evaluated together with the findings made in the hospital and the literature study.
