Abstract

The aim of this study is to address the issue of requirement of makeup in workplace, to determine the sources of this requirement and analyze the problems it creates for women. In this context, the historical roots of wearing make-up were investigated, current data on the subject were utilized, news from online sources were examined, literature was reviewed and the subject was evaluated in line with various theories. According to the inferences obtained from the study, the requirement for women to wear makeup, though framed as a mark of professionalism, imposes extra time and financial burdens and may be rooted in societal gender norms. One of the consequences of this situation may be that women continue to work in certain professions that are considered appropriate for gender roles, which may strengthen gender inequality. In this context, the study drew attention to the need for both organizational and legal regulations regarding the mandatory use of make-up in the workplace; it also emphasized the importance of addressing the issue on a country, sector and occupation basis in future research.
