Abstract

Earthquakes not only result in high levels of mortality and generate biopsychosocial and environmental challenges, but also intensify internal displacement and transform social life. Individuals internally displaced by earthquakes experience challenging circumstances at the intersection of various disadvantages. This review article assesses earthquake-induced internal displacement from a social work perspective. Thus, the disadvantages experienced by individuals internally displaced by earthquakes are discussed from a social work perspective, focusing on the stages of disaster management. This study is the first scientific initiative to develop recommendations for making social work interventions in disaster management phases sensitive to internal displacement due to earthquakes. Such an initiative can guide social work professionals, disaster management practitioners, and policymakers in developing effective interventions in disaster management phases.
