Abstract

The problems experienced during childhood in institutional care such as absence of parental stimulus, insecure attachment, low sense of self, low self-esteem, tendency to violence, retardation in mental, physical and cognitive development are negatively reflected on the relationships of children with numerous social systems (school, family they have founded, workplace) in the following years. Hence, so as to strengthen these individuals in need of protection; both in-institutional care and post-institutional care social services are important for them to develop skills to tackle with problems and to maintain control over their own lives. It is more difficult for these institutional care leavers with the existing problems to adopt to social life. Starting from this point of view, the main objective of current review is to explain the obstacles of institutional care leavers in transition to societal/independent life. Thus, it discusses the importance of in-institutional care and post-institutional care social services which are conducted/need to be conducted for the problems of these individuals in Turkey.
