MILITARY TRANSFORMATION IN TANG DYNASTY: JIEDUSHI SYSTEM AND IT’S EFFECTS

Abstract

The aim of this study is to briefly discuss the reasons behind the system of Jiedushi, which was first proposed by Emperor Xuanzong as a military reform that replaced the Fubing system during the Tang Emperor Xuanzong’s reign. Problems that emerged in practice, consequences of the system, and impact of it on the dynasty will be discussed briefly.

Jiedushi system which was first introduced by Emperor Xuanzong is one of the reforms aimed at changing military structure of the empire. Emperor Xuanzong has made many changes in both the social and military fields During his reign. While some of these reforms have been successful, for the reasons given below the Jiedushi system was a failure. In this study, using Sogdian-Turkish general An Lushan and Anshi Rebellion as an example the reasons for this failure and negative results of power inbalance caused by the system was presented and discussed.
