THE MUSLIM BROTHERHOOD IN EGYPT’S POLITICAL SCENE: THE LONG HISTORY OF REPRESSION AND RECONCILIATION CYCLE

The Muslim Brotherhood occupies a distinctive place in Egypt and across the spectrum of modern Islamic movements. The ideas that have been revealed and influenced by its existence for nearly a hundred years have left a significant mark all over the Islamic world. Reflecting on the Brotherhood is a kind of roadmap for determining the outlines of the relationship between religion and politics, not only in Egypt but also in the Islamic world. The experiences of the Brotherhood, with its slogan "Islam is the solution", and what they have experienced in the last decade are important in terms of the evolution of the organization. This article addresses the conditions that allowed the Brotherhood to rise to power and its counterpart in the political scene and society. The dynamics that led to the survival of the governments in Egypt shed light on the post-2013 struggle for existence/non-existence. The 2011 Uprisings marked a radical change in the history of the Brotherhood, which also contains continuities. In this context, this study discusses the process leading up to the coup and its aftermath.
