Abstract

Vertical gardens (green walls) have become effective in urban design by offering an innovative and different perspective to landscape architecture. Sustainability is the most important principle in the maintenance and application services of vertical gardens, which are becoming increasingly important. Vertical gardens have important benefits for the city, urban landscape design and urban dwellers. In this study, it was aimed to determine the place and importance of vertical gardens in urban landscape design. The history of vertical gardens from past to present, the methods used in current applications, in which areas and for what purpose they have been used have been researched. Structural and plant material used, design decisions have provided contributions to cities, making domestic and foreign literature and the world is described by analyzing practices and Istanbul Turkey. In summary, our cities now tend to grow vertically as a result of concreting pressures. Therefore, it can be said that vertical gardens, also called green walls, are one of the elements of the urban landscape that is increasing in importance day by day. However, since vertical gardens carry technical and architectural risks, it is essential to make correct design and applications in terms of both structural and finishing.
