Evaluation of Contemporary Additions in Historical Area with Formal and Notional Criterions

Abstract

Historical environments are areas that are articulated, expression of architectural accumulation and reflects the historical process. In this areas, new design applications depending on social and cultural requirements which are changing, developing, diversifying can be found. Within the scope of this study, contemporary additions in building scale which has historical value and articulated in a protected structure are analyzed. Contemporary additions both take  shape by articulated environment and building and these are the design reclecfting their period, technologic and sociocultural developments.

Contemporary additions can serve different functions. It is concentrated in exhibiting and presenting functions such as museums and cultural centers so at this study cultural buildings are analyzed. The time of the sample group is limited to the 21st century due to both the expansion of the field of application and technological developments allowing different designs and applications. The sample group is created by selecting 15 buildings which have built since 2000 from Europe and Turkey.The aim of the study is to analyze contemporary addition examples with regards to design approach, space organization type, formal criterion and notional criterion, and to evaluate these sample groups comparing.
