War-Migration and Altered Neighbourhoods: A Sample of Istanbul Fatih District (Akşemsettin Neighborhood)

Abstract

In addition to being the human tragedy of wars, there are also environmental tragedy with many negative effects on the environment. Wars do not only affect the area where the war is taking place; it also has an impact on neighborhoods, regions, cities, and even countries. These effects occur with migration.

The phenomenon of migration has important impacts on the social and spatial structure of the settlements receiving immigrants. In recent years, Turkey has become a center of attraction of migration.

 The purpose of this study is to investigate the spatial change that stems from the migration from Syria to Turkey in the scope of neighbourhood scale as a result of the war in Syria. The purpose of this study is to investigate the spatial change and transformation gest in the scope of neighbourhood scale as a result of the war in Syria.

 As a result of the study done in the sample of Istanbul Fatih District Akşemsettin Neighbourhood, it has been determined that spatial transformation has occurred in both visual and functional sense, old neighborhood residents are alienated to their surroundings and they lose their social relations and identities in the process of settlement to the neighbourhood by Syrian migrants.
